A school named Vikaasa

If you've ever come across a Vikaasite (alumnus of the famous Vikaasa school), you would know why I took all the pains to scribble such a big note on my school. The school is truly one of its kind and deserves mention to every human being I meet in this world. I started my kindergarten there. Which school today has a toy train around the school, ample play hours, no writing work, no exams, sleeping hours, gardening time, a day dedicated to art, craft and music?? I can hear you say very few.. or can even be none.. A kindergarten is the time when a child gets moulded, when we entered school, our teachers were there at the entrance , welcoming us with open hands and would carry our lunch bags to our lockers. Then the classes would begin, yup in the garden. An hour of gardening in the early afternoon. So lovely to see the plants that we had sweated to plant and nurture bear flowers, fruits or vegetables! You know what, every plant that you have planted has a placard with its name and yours! Isnt that cute!!
Then come the music and dance hours when our teachers used to play the piano/guitar and sing and dance with us with the very famous nursery rhymes! I cant forget the "Incy Wincy Spider" and "Sing a song of sixpence", my teachers taught me with action. Trust me even today I remember all my nursery rhymes by heart (some even with the actions they taught ;-)
After having lunch seated at your "ma'am's lap" , all of us would sleep for a lovely hour. Get up, get ready after washing your face. And leave for home! Yup the school would last from 9 to 1 only everyday! And not to forget that our school was located on a hill called "Pasumalai" (that means cow+hill in Tamil). It was an old English building, while thoroughly, stone pillars and benches, cute swimming pool and a very very tidy lawn! If you want to know how my school looks like take a drive to Madurai and ask for Taj - Garden Retreat Hotel. Yes by all means our school qualified to be a star hotel and is now owned by the Taj group of Hotels!! More will follow to speak about the ever lasting school days!!!!!!!!

Alright folks lets get down to reality, as long as the British Management was running the school it was the greatest. Now it's just another school on the block. Gone are the days where we had the best anglo teachers and best teachers n principals. When Madura Coats broke up and the management changed and coats viyela began it was the End. Textile Industry went down and so did the school run by it;s management. Now the school strength is about 150 odd and i bet the teachers cant speak one line of english properly. Speaks about its quality now doesnt it? Am from the 96 batch of vikaasa ambas. Hope y'all know vikaasa ambas was only upto 10th not 12th.

Dear Anonymous,
Agreed. I was referring to the school when I joined in LKG (1982) and passed out tenth std in 1995. I have no clue abt how it is now. And this post completely is about the school at that period and not what it is now. I was in Ambas vikaasa too, was in the 1995 ICSE batch.
Thanks for visiting.
Regards
Deeksh

Hey, I go way before all of you, when the Vikasa school was started in '72 or 73. At that time the school was only open to the family of senior managers of Madura Coats. Mr. Martin Henry was the Managing Director. Both my girls (Brinda and Rajshree) went to school there for 3 to 4 years and then we relocated to the U.S. Rajshree did till her 5th grade while Brinda did till her 3rd grade. Mr. Iangar was the pricipal then, in fact he was the first principal. I am trying to locate some of the students who attended the school then, or their families.
